Amoebiasis is a worldwide disease, particularly common in tropical countries and places where public hygiene and sanitation are poor. Amoebic infection is caused by an organism, Entamoeba histolytica (EH) which usually spreads through contaminated food and water. Intestinal Amoebic Infection: During the acute phase of intestinal amoebiasis the patient may have loose motions, with or without mucus and blood, besides griping pain in the abdomen which may be severe at the time of evacuation. In chronic amoebiasis, a patient may complain of a dull pain in the lower abdomen, alternate constipation and diarrhoea, foul smell in the stools, formation of gases, and loss of appetite. Some people with amoebic infection may remain symptom-free or experience little discomfort but they may pass cysts in their stools (free cyst passers) and are potential carriers of the disease which spread it to others.

Extra-intestinal Infection: This amoebiasis infection is usually associated with a previous history of intestinal amoebiasis. When the liver is involved, the patient ‘may have pain in the right upper abdomen, fever, sweating, loss of weight, and anaemia.

Importance of Diet: Successful treatment of amoebiasis depends both on drugs and on proper diet and good hygiene. For quick recovery it is best to eat a protein-rich, low-roughage and low­carbohydrate diet. Use of clean drinking water and avoidance of contamination are important.

Drugs for Intestinal Amoebiasis

The drugs used in treating amoebiasis can be divided into three categories according to their effectiveness.

Metronidazole (Flagyl, Metrogyl, Unimezol)

Since most of it is absorbed in the intestines, another drug which acts in intestinal amoebiasis should be used along with it to avoid relapse and to eradicate the disease. Allergic reactions to antibiotics are usually mild, in the form of skin rashes, fever, and joint pain. Serious allergic reactions, such as anaphylactic shock (hypersensitivity to an antigen), are quite rare. A person allergic to one antibiotic is likely to be allergic to

other antibiotics of the same group.

Sport activities like playing ball, skiing or swimming where you use your whole body will give the same positive effect and in addition they will strengthen your condition. Activities like jogging or cycling are good for your lower body, but they must be combined with activities that also strengthen your upper body.

- Take a few minutes to stretch out every day. Have also a good session of stretching exercises at last every third day. It is important to take time to stretch out every part of your body in every natural direction. If your back or some limb is excessively curved or bended toward one particular direction, it is important to stretch out enough time in the opposite direction. Yoga is a good way of stretching out.

If you’re lifting weights the same way you did when you were at school, it’s time for a change. Forget the vanity muscles. Think strength and cardiovascular fitness. Your new goal: roughly 50% cardiovascular exercise (including warm up), 40% weights and 10% stretching. Here’s an easy program to get you started.

Monday

10 minutes on aerobic exercise (running, skipping, tennis or swimming) at a comfortable pace (60 to 70 percent of your maximum heart rate).

10 minutes of upper body strength training. Do two sets of 8 to 12 reps of the following; bench press, military press, lat pull downs, biceps curl and triceps extension.

15 minutes of aerobic exercise at a slightly more intense pace (70 to 85% of your maximum heart rate).

5 minutes of stretching. Pay attention to back and hamstring muscles. Hit both areas with a simple two step stretch. Lie on your back and draw your knees to your chest. Hold for 60 seconds. This stretches the lower back. Now put both feet flat on the floor, knees bent, and raise your left leg straight up toward the sky. Hold for 60 seconds, then repeat with the right leg. Do three reps of each stretch.

Wednesday

Do three circuits, hitting the weights from both the Monday and Friday workouts. Do eight to 12 repetitions of each lift, moving quickly between sets.

Friday

This is the same as Monday’s workout, except your 20 minutes of strength training will target the lower body. Do two sets of 8 to 12 reps of the following; leg extension, (quadriceps), leg curl (hamstrings) and abdominal crunch.

The drugs in tap water are ranging significantly depending on the location of the water, but some of the pharmaceutical products that have been found include birth control medication, sex hormone therapy medications, powerful painkillers, cancer medications and antibiotics. While it may be assumed that pharmaceutical drugs in tap water cannot be harmful, some water supplies have been linked to a breakdown in the growth of cells, and even the onset of cancer development!

What this means is that drugs in tap water are finding their way into our homes, into our drinking supplies, and into the intricate workings of our bodies, and there is no real telling how much damage can be done. If we do not begin to work to reduce the amount of drugs in tap water soon, we may find our children with stunted growth or development, and we may find ourselves contracting a surprising number of illnesses and disorders that pharmaceutical solutions can no longer solve. You could be building a tolerance to the drugs in tap water, meaning that when you do need to take them; your body will no longer be able to benefit.
